Process

"LIFE" and "Books" are printed in the background behind the main message. Each of these is printed on paper that was inked in various combinations, then printed with typeset lettering. The technique of ink wiping involves letting paper move in reverse through the rollers in a Vandercook cylinder press, resulting in unpredictable coloring on both sides of the paper. Solvents can be added to the rollers to create variations in inking as well, and some pages are put through multiple times.
