The winter quarter is filled with opportunities to learn, create, and BE!
At my core, I am an educator. I guide learning that is personal, responsive, and innovative (and often a little unconventional). I believe every teacher’s task is to design and establish a space and opportunity for transformation. I also believe direct experience is essential for transformation.
From my own experiences, I know that teaching - like life - is a practice. Transformation happens in the teacher too.
A little more about my teaching background:
After earning a Masters Degree in Education, I began a career as a special education teacher in both public and private schools. This path led to a discovery of museum education, which took me on amazing adventures in the Smithsonian Institution as well as private museums, art centers, and libraries over 25 years. I've taught a variety of art workshops in museums and art centers, and I’ve also taught yoga and meditation for the past 11 years.
I hope you’ll join me for a transformational experience in a workshop or yoga class this winter!
Looking for some mindful movement in 2024? Every Friday at 11AM, I teach gentle yoga at Yogi Underground in Falls Church, VA and online.
If you’re in the DC area, you can explore letterpress printing with me at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Hyattsville, MD.
Make & Take: New Year's Affirmation
Jan. 17, 7-9 PM
Join us for a fun night learning about letterpress printing as you print motivational cards with your personal word or phrase of encouragement for the year ahead. Everyone will make a set with their chosen word or phrase, and there will be an opportunity to swap with others at the end of class as well.
Abstract Letterpress Concertinas
Feb. 10 and 11, 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM
This 2-day intensive will be co-taught with book artist and educator Nathalie Ryan.
You'll playfully experiment with abstract designs and ink wipes on a Vandercook cylinder press, then design and assemble a concertina accordion book structure with a book cloth wrapped hardcover. Together we’ll explore strategies for marrying our abstract content into book form, considering rhythm, repetition, and layering. You’ll leave with a finished book and extra prints for future projects.
Make & Take: Deeper Impressions
Feb. 21, 7-9 PM
Join this engaging introduction to letterpress as we learn how to use the Vandercook press to communicate with impressions of text on paper—without ink! You’ll learn basic typesetting and take away examples of your efforts in blind embossing.
Inky Bookmarks: Abstract Ink Wipes with Overprinting
Feb. 22 and 28, 6-9 PM
Join in celebration of National Reading Month and create your very own fun and funky letterpress-printed bookmarks. In the first session, students will print ink wipes on the Vandercook presses. You’ll earn how to ink a press as they play with color and texture, and experiment with a fun, freestyle approach to printing. Inky papers will be left to dry between sessions. The following week, typeset and print a word, monogram, or decorative type ornament using a Tabletop press. At the end of class, students will leave with a collection of one-of-a-kind bookmarks and double-sided print pieces they can use for other creative projects.
Letterpress Club: Inks, Pressure Prints, and Abstract Designs
Five Saturdays in March, 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM
This intermediate series will lead you on a creative journey with ink, paper, and design explorations on the Vandercook cylinder presses—maybe without ever including any letters at all! Letterpress Club is a playful, supportive atmosphere to experiment with techniques and build upon previous experiences and skills.
